A Spectrum Of Beliefs

On the first day of our Evolution Unit, we examined a Spectrum of Beliefs showing a full range of beliefs regarding creation and evolution. I asked you to place yourself on the scale. We also watched two videos supporting different sides of the issue. If you need to revisit the videos, see the links below.

Isn't Evolution Just A Theory?
Why Is Evolution Controversial Anyway?

Where do you fall on the spectrum? Why? Make sure that your explanation is well planned and detailed.

I think on the spectrum of beliefs I would be between the creationists and the "in betweens". I believe that God created the earth, man, plants, animals, and everything in the universe, and that everything the Bible says is true. I also believe that evolution (change over time) can occur, but when it does, God causes it to happen.

I think I lie on this end of the spectrum because I have been raised as a Christian and have been influenced to believe in creationism, but I think that even if I hadn't been raised with the church, I would still believe in creationism because it just doesn't seem to me that all the complex life on earth- humans, animals, plants, cells, etc.- could be formed from just one little amoeba. I still have much to learn about the theory of evolution and the beliefs concerning it, so I may be a little ignorant about evolution, but I don't think that my beliefs will change.

On the spectrum of beliefs I would fall into the in between group. This is partly because I have only been to chruch a few times in my life and my religion, (Roman Cathlioc) does accept the evoultion theory. I am also not that religous of a person so that probably also makes a difference. Although I do believe that God helped create things that are here today, most of the evidence points towards evolution being the realistic and detailed event which created the earth and all of its beings.

On the spectrum, I am a creationist. I believe that God created everything. I believe that evolution only occurs in what we as humans do. For example, 1000 years ago we didn't have cars or t-shirts or jeans like we do today. I think that the way we act has evolved. We like different things today. I don't believe that people themselves change.

I believe this because I have been raised in a Christian household and therefore Christian beliefs have been implanted into my mind. I also was either homeschooled or went to a Christian school all my life until high school.

I think I'm pretty much the same as ChristaS in that I'm on the left side of the scale by creationism and maybe a little toward the middle. I believe that the sun, earth, plants, animals, people, and all the other things in the universe. I also think that even though the Bible isn't a science text book, everything it says is true.

I've been raised as a Christian and it's hard to change something I have believed my whole life, but I am totally open and willing to see the other side's beliefs. I can't choose one side without knowing both views and I'm curious to see what evolutionists think even though I don't think my views will ever change. I agree with Christa in that even if I hadn't been raised my whole life as a Christian, I would still believe in creationism because from what I've learned there isn't much proof on evolution and it just seems wierd. But I'm curious to learn the "scientific" side behind it and to learn exactly what it is.

On the spectrum of beliefs I would probably have to be placed on the in bewtween group. Because lately there has been some personal issues that have been driving me more towards the evolution side. I used to always believe completely and totally on the creationism side but some things have come into my life that are making me believe otherwise. I think I will be on this side for a long time unless something happens that really leads me to believe that the creationism side is completely true, or more scientific evidence shows up that proves the evolution theory.

I would have to say that I am in the inbetween group. My reason for this is that I dont think all of this amazing things could have happened by themselves, but we have scientific proof that evolution is happening. I mean making an entire universe with living beings must have taken a super being, but I wasnt there so I wouldnt know. I kind of interperate the bible differently from some people. I see the 6 days as 6 different stages. So these "days" could all be 1,000,000 years more or less each. In each of these days organisms would be changing and evolving. So I think the bible is right in a sense, its just trying to explain how everything was formed in a different way.

On the spectrum of beliefs I would be like Christa and Maria. I would be more toward the creationism side, because I am a Christian and I believe that God created the earth and the people in it. I would be a little toward the middle because I believe that change does occur over time. Things happen on the earth every day that can be explained scientifically. I just believe that God makes these things happen.

I would be willing to learn about evolution, but I don't think my view will change. I can't piture humans evolving from a single cell. Studying the cell really shows how complex humans really are. We have tons of microscopic cells in our body. It's hard for me to imagine how humans could be created without a God. However, I am open to learning what evolutionists believe.

I think on the spectrum i would have to fall in between because i do belive that God created man, but to a certain extent. I also belive that evolution can and does occur and i belive that everything happens for a reason.
I believe this because this is what happens everything changes at one point in time no matter what you think. Things will always change. I am exited to learn aboiut evolution but i do not htink my views on this subject will change.

I would have to say that I am right in the middle of the spectrum. I would say that I am this because I am not really sure where I stand on the whole idea of evolution. I know that we have all evolved over time, but I am not sure where it all started. I do believe in God, there is no question about that, but I don't know whether to believe that He created the world and all of its beings or to believe that we everyone evolved from one source. I think that my position will switch eithar to the left side or the right side by the end of this unit because, like I said before, I don't know exactly where I fall yet.

If there were a chart displaying the different spectrum of beliefs, with the far right being solely darwinists, and the left side solely creationists, i think that i would be in the middle but mostly leaning to the right of the spectrum.
Mostly i believe that life on earth is to similar to not have evolved from one cell. I think that it is obvious that evolution occured to one species of animal and that when that animal moved around the world it adapted to it's new climates and altered itself over generation to become what it is today, including us.
People of oriental descent have folds over their eyes because of the harsh sunlight in their part of the world, that is a trait that grew over centuries, and African Americans have darker skin i think because of the amount of sunlight that they recieve.
Yet i do not believe that there isn't a higher being in the universe. i doubt that we are the smartest being in the universe, or the only beings, i just do not believe that that higher being created the world in seven days, i just do not think that this is the case when facts and science prove that the earth has been around longer than the bible or genesis says that it has.
I believe that there is no evolution and THE EARTH IS FLAT!?!

On the chart I think would be between creation science/ intelligent and evolutionists. But, I real don't know which way I believe. I was never taught the right and wrong way on how everything was created. I am not religious person so I don't understand their side of the story, and same with the theory of evolution. I guess I real don't know what my beliefs are when it comes to evolution.

I would definitely fall in the middle of the chart, but leaning a little more to the left(creationism). I do believe that evolution occurs naturally as a life goes on through the years, but only as God had intended. I also believe that God created the world on which we live. However, I also believe that evolution and creationism can function and work together. They are different, but they're not black and white, they're more like red and orange. That's why it's a little hard to choose sides without all of the evidence(which no one actually knows).

On the Spectrum of belief, I would fall right in the middle, like pretty much everyone else.
I believe that God created the world in seven days. But, as riley stated, it would be nearly impossible to create everything in seven days. One argument that the two sides clash on I think is the fact that there is so much evidence in fossils and dinosaurs and stuff that proves that dinosaurs once existed, and that the world was around for a lot longer than seven days before man came to be. I would like to present the argument that for God, a day could be much different than ours. His day might be much longer than ours is, maybe even encompassing millions or billions of Earth years. I belive that Creationism and Darwinism work hand-in-hand and that both could be true, except the fact that Darwinism says that humans evolved from a "lower being". I believe that we are created in God's image. Other than that, I believe that what the Bible tells us about the creation is true, but that Darwinism and the Big Bang theory give us at least one explanation of how it all happened.

On the spectrum, I would be on the evolution side. It just makes more sense to me than the whole fact that there is a higher being that created everything. Even if I had been raised as a Christian and went to church, I don't think my views would've changed much. I just like science better.

On the spectrum of beliefs I stand on the creation by God. I am a very religious person and I have a strong belief that God created us. I don't believe how us humans could come from monkeys. I know science is mostly right, but I just don't know how thtis can be true.

On the spectrum, I would have to say I fall right in the middle but more leaned towards the creationism side. I do believe that evolution took place but I think that a supernatural force, or God in my personal beliefs, is what "pushed the button" to create life and watched evolution occur on its own.

I fall under the Evolutionists 100%. I truely believe that we have evolved from a comment ancestor. While growing up, my parents gave me the option of choosing where my beliefs lie. I looked over religion, and it just is not something that I believe at all. Scientists have found fossils supporting Darwin's theory of evolution, which only strengthens my belief in evolutionism.

I belief in the inbetweens. I am not very religious and i do believe what they teach us in science. But i feel in the middle because there are really religious people out there and only believe that God created man and everything else but there are people out there who were taught and only believe that evolution actually happened. i feel that they go hand in hand. Like i said before im not very relgious but i feel that yes we did come up from evolution but God did have a part in this. Evolution is a change over time, so its obvious that we have changed over time and i feel that yes we did comr up form our ancestors but God made us evlove in a small way.

I personally believe that evolution is more then just a theory and it has in a sense been bullied by religion for thousands of years. Ever since religon has been a key factor in peoples life's it seems that it is abnormal to be outside of that and i believe people are afraid to be an "outkast" to their society. When people become so timid to this they can't see the other side of creation which is evolution. I believe that if everyone saw both sides without any bias then they would lean closer to evolution then before.

I myself believe in God making the world in Six days and the seventh day as the day he rested. But I just interpert the Bible as it is given in the text, i'm not sure whether to believe it was actually six days or just a methaphorical play on words.
"God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day." Genesis 1:31
But i do disagree with concepts of the evolution thoery being that it is taught we were decended from a line of similar species. It is somewhat against what i've been taught.
"...the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. " Genesis 2:6
But the way i believe, i'd rather not really disscuss it due to the natural of human behavior and anger.
I addmitt i disagree with most of it, execpt for adaption over time to certain world environments.
But i find it quite interesting to learn about Darwin's theories, i like the knowledge, i want and need to get the information on both sides. I can tell you right off the bat, no matter what i learn it will not change my opinion about it, but it might intrigue me more.

I agree with Shannon to a certain point considering im not very religious as well. It seems easier to believe the theory of evolution because it’s backed up by facts while not by ancient text. Id fall more into the scientific category because usually things we learn in school are true and give us a better education. I think perhaps if I were more religious id have a better perspective however I do not think I would change very far from the right side of the spectrum.

I think my beliefs are very close to evolutionists more than the other side of the spectrum. I have little religious beliefs; especially since I believe in two different religions: catholic and Jewish.
In our family dinner when I was younger we would talk about this issue. My parents believe human was evolved from another organism. Though I believe this as well because of what I think not what my parents. I think this organism is a monkey as well.
I believe most of what science tells us. Though others ideas of scientists’ are very far fetched. Such as cloning I think someday could happen but cloning a full person is basically impossible. As long as scientists have truth and facts behind what they tell us I will believe it.

Due to my religious beliefs and backrounds I lie between intelligent design and creationism because although I strongly believe in the idea that the earth was created in 7 days, I don't necessarily believe it was a literal 7 days. I believe that some evolution occured within the seven days and therefore except some aspects of evolution. After a section on Evolution in Anthropology last year, I have begun to realize how individuals with such religious views can also accept evolution as a plausible theory on how certain animal species evolved. Although this is seemingly intelligent design, what makes me quite creationist is that I do not believe that humans evolved from monkeys in any manner. Although, I do belive other species evolve and will continue to evolve throughout time.

I would have to say that I fall in the middle of the spectrum of beliefs because I believe that there is a higher power than us, and I don't think that it is possible for one cell to create something with this complexity. Even if this supposed evolution did occur over a vast period of time.

On the spectrum, I would fall on the Creation Science side. This is because I was brought up in the Christian faith. I believe that there is a God and that He did create all things. I also believe that science and religion can work together. God gave us the ability to think and reason, so if scientists want to use their minds to study life, then so be it. I do not think that God would be against us for using our minds to gain knowledge of the world around us.

I personally think that I could fall anywhere from creationist to evolutionist on the scale because I do have a mixture of both. I do not believe that what religion teaches us about evolution is all true because i am not a very religous person i have only been to church a few times. I think that science and faith can work together. I do believe that God created most of the things on this planet and so forth, but evidence proves that evolution hold the responsibility.

I think on the spectrum of beliefs I would be on the far right hand side because i believe strongly in the science of evolution. I have been brought up in a very scientific family and we were never very religious so the theory of creation seemed like a story. How would a create that doesn't really exsist make up the entire world in seven days when there was nothing here to begin with such as matter. Science, I think, with the theory of evolution can be proven better than the bible can prove creation. We can see science working but we can not go back into time and see what really happened. I am the kind of person that likes to see proof before i believe something.

My position on the spectrum is the same as courtney l's. While I generally like to consider both sides of an issue, on the spectrum, I guess I would be a radical evolutionist. I agree with morgan m about how evolution is backed by fact. I am a pretty cynnical person and often don't believe things unless I can see them, or they have been proven logically/scientifically. Because of that, I have always had trouble seeing creationism or intelligent design as a kind of science. I wasn't raised religious, but like many other people said, I can't imagine my beliefs being much different if I had been brought up differently. Even as a little kid, I didn't believe in a lot. I gave up on Santa Claus in kindergarten. However, I guess there is no way of knowing what I could have been like in another situation. Even a small change could have made me a totally different person. While not religious, I don't think there's anything wrong with following a religion. It is good to have and example to follow, I just don't think that science should mix with any religion. I thought matta had some interesting points. There are biases applied to both sides and it is easy to make generalizations about atheists and religious people.

Blogger BenE said...

I think I would fall in the middle, but a little more towards evolution. I am not very eligious, but I do believe in god to some extent. I tend to believe in things that have solid facts to prove it. Evolution has these facts. I think God created life, but the life that he created has evolved into what it is today. To think that there is a higher power is harder for me to grasp than to think that everything has evolve because evolution is all around us. When someone moves into a different area, they evolve and addapt to their new surroundings. Evolution also seems more logical to me, but I don't think life just appeared, that seems a little farfeched to me.

On the spectrum of Beliefs, I'd be between a creationist and the "in betweens" as well, because I believe what the bible says about the creation of the world. True, "change over time" happens, because everything would change or everything would just stop and we'd get nowhere, but I don't believe that everything started out as one tiny cell, which split and now we have all the organisms we do. And certain organsims may be related to each other but that's because of different animals being bred or mutations (which are sometimes due to scientific experiments), which isn't saying that everything is linked to each other because we all started as one cell.

I personally am highly creationist, because I look at religion and see it this way, wether you are Wiccan, Typical, Christian, Mormon, New Age, Islamic or so on, there is ultimately a need for a higher power or creator considering so many religons developed this way and it was not until recently athieism and agnostics became so big. I don't believe in putting down any other belif systems, I just totally believe in Christanity. It's just that if I am wrong and there is no God, alright. If there is a God as described in the bible and I'm wrong, THAT'S A HUGE FREAKIN' DEAL!

On the spectrum of beliefs I'm in between but mostly to the right. I believe that evolution is a theory that can be accepted. Besides how would we know exactly how we evolved, we weren't there. Well as you can guess I am a creationist for I was raised as a Catholic and I believe that with a simple commandment God created everything. For me personally it is hard to believe that everything was created by evolution for there has to be a source from which it was created. It's hard to imagine the planets lining up the way they are today and for Earth to be perfectly placed; not too far away from the Sun or to close to the Sun. There had to be something that caused this, and me answer is God. I will say though that there are things that I do believe about science. Either way I'm open to anything. Therefore I guess I would be placed in the middle leaning to the creationism side.

How do you put yourself into one of the listed categories? The answer to that question is 'very carefully and with a lot of thought'. If I could look at myself through another's eyes, I would say I'm classified under the balance-point of the two, right in the middle. My belief is that few things in this world are truly 'black or white', and my perception of this topic would be that it's very grey. I am a Christian (Roman Catholic, if you want to be more precise) and I do believe in the Bible and its teachings, but I also believe in the science behind the controversy of how we came to be on this earth. I do believe that God is the creator, but I also think that we evolved over time ,with his help and guidance, along with many other beings. Do I think that the earth and all its inhabitants were created in 7 days? I can't say, because I don't know about all of you, but I wasn't there; but I do think that the 7 days are more symbolic more than literal. I don't know; I could be wrong, who am I to blatantly state what happened so very long ago? But I do believe deeply in a few things; that I can believe in both Evolution and Creation( and still stay true to my heart and to my faith), and both those beliefs can be balanced on a big scale, and that God gave us brains and thoughts to use them. So that’s what I’m doing; using all my thoughts and brainpower for all their worth!

I don't believe that everything was created from some bang that triggered single cell organisms to evolve into the millions of celled organisms we are today. Over time, I think there have been small evolutions, like between spicies, but I dont think that any major species came from another one, like humans from monkeys. On the spectrum of beliefs, I would place myself in the middle category where the religion of creation and the theory of evolution co-exist to help explain where we came from. Being raised in a basic Christian-beliefs family, I was originally taught that evolution is wrong. My father, however, opened my eyes to the alternative possibility of both religion and science being correct when he simply stated "I bet Adam and Eve looked a great deal different than we look now." I believe that science and religion should not cancel each other out but should work together to unravel the mystery of where we came from and how we were created.

I believe that I fall between the creationist side and the "in betweens" becuase of what the bible says: How God created the earth, land, water, sky, plants, animals. He created everything and I believe that, but also I believe evolution does happen and it shows that over the years, no doubt. Scientists have been showing the world now that we "evolved" over time and have been trying to prove all this happened because of a big bang theory. So what if the big bang happened, God cause it that way. What would have created atoms and neutrons and everything else needed for a big bang? God. God caused our evolution because he knew it was the right thing to do to make our civilization become what it is, otherwise...we may still be monkeys.

I think that the earth was created by the big bang and thats how the earth was created. Yet i believe in god createing plants and anmials. But then from there i think that humans were created through evolution.

Like Christa, I would lie between the creationists and the Middle. I believe in God, and everything that the Bible says, but I also believe that the Bible is not meant to be literal all of the time. I believe that God could have caused change over time to happen. I know that my beliefs won't change; in fact, I think that this unit will make them stronger.

On the spectrum of beliefs, I am in between creation science, intelligent design, and evolutionists. My family has never had any real set religious beliefs, so I've made up my own based on what they have taught me. My beliefs are a combination of both of my parents' beliefs, and I really enjoy this freedom to expand and never have to think a certain way. For example, I believe that there is a greater creator, and that things happen for a reason and not just by chance. Everything has a specific purpose in life, which can somewhat explain differences in our world. I love science, but don't always agree with some of the things that we are taught. Some of them just don't make sense, and I base my beliefs on things that make sense to me. But back to my specific beliefs, I believe in a greater creator and that everything is based off of things in the past, kind of like evolution. In general, I agree with different bits and pieces of theories and beliefs, and have combined them into my own ideas. This really makes me feel like I have freedom, which is how beliefs should make you feel.

I would have to say I am on the left side (the creationists) because it makes the most sense to me. I don't know everything about evolution, but for some reason the idea that these conditions for life like the earth, sea, and sun have always been there doesn't make sense. It brings questions like who created those things, and how did they create life. I think that God created them and all life. I am not close-minded and would like to understand evolution more so I can become a well-rounded person. However, I do not think this will change my beliefs.

I would be in the middle of the spectrum. I dont go to church so I wouldnt really know what the bible says is true about creationism. But I do believe that god did create some things in the universe, but also evolution had to come into play somewhere. Change is always happening, that's evolution. The world was created somehow, and that's creationism. I believe in both sides.

I would have to agree with Olivia to a certain degree. I would have to place myself between creationism and creational science. I believe in God and the bible and the world was created in seven days but I also believe that evolution occurs naturally in animals. However I do not believe that humans evolved from monkeys or anything like that.

Its kind of wierd but some times i beive in god and sometimes i dont. Like i believe in miracles but not that god created everything. Maybe he created one thing and everything evolved off of that. So since i belive in taht i would say im more of an evolutionist. But im moslty inbetween. Because the first species or organism had to some from somewhere right

I think I lie on the right end of the spectrum because I do not believe in the belief that the earth was created in seven days. I also believe that we all evolved from one organism.

I'm with the "in betweens" on the spectrum of beliefs. I'm with this side because I do believe God created the earth but I don't think the bible should be taken lierally. Also because I can't ignore the fact that they are digging up dinosuars and primitive human bones. Also scientists believe we evolved from apes but that doesn't mean God didn't cause it.

this is a pretty controversial question and it can divide a lot of people, but i would have to say that i fall somewhere in between. with the progression of science more is brought to the attention of relgious people like me that some things in the bible can easily be questioned. i have a balance between creationism and evolution however i would lean more into believing in evolution. there is actual proof right in front of me which is more satisfying than just my own faith. i think the idea of adam and eve is difficult to believe because of many various aspects. However i think it is a nice idea to believe that we all started somewhere and we are all distant relatives of one another but it is just much harder to believe something so abstract and it is much easier to understand that we gradually changed over time.

I belive that on the specturm i would be right were christa said she was. Im christain & i belive that god created all things. but i belive evolution is somehow involved.

My specific belifes as a chrisatin do chnage every once in a while though. I do think evolution occurs, there is to much proof. but i cannot belive we came from monkeys. I belive humans themselves may have changed slightly. But other things may have changed alot. Im actually kind of confused on the subject. but being christian ill leave it up to god.
